SUMMARY:ANZ Branch Feb Webinar: Forensic Radiographers - Giving Evidence in Court
DESCRIPTION:ANZ Branch presents two webinars:\n\n\nRadiographers being a Witness in court by Michael Proudfoot\nDuring Michael’s career\, he has had to act multiple times as an expert witness for the NSW Police and/or the NSW Coroners Department and on two occasions act as the principal witness for the Plaintiff appearing before the Health Care Complaints Unit and the NSW Supreme Court. He wishes to share these experiences\, some of which were confronting\, to give you a better understanding of how the process works and what you may possibly encounter. The world of Forensic Radiography and Imaging in general can encompass many situations in which we may be called upon to participate in situations that may become confronting. This not only involves the imaging involved and how best to perform them\, the necessary documentation but also if we to appear before the regulatory body to act as either expert witnesses\, or a witness for the Plaintiff if we are present at an unforeseen event.\n\nSo you have been asked to be an Expert Witness- what to consider before you say yes!\nChristine is a senior practicing radiographer with a long history in lecturing\, CT scanning\, student supervision\, accreditation and fluoroscopy. She is currently employed as a senior radiographer at Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania\, Australia. Being asked to act as an expert witness means you are recognised as having specialised knowledge or expertise in your field. In this webinar\, Christine explores what this role truly involves—from reviewing records\, reports\, and documentation\, to applying best practice standards\, professional norms\, and evidence-based methodology. \nThis session will discuss: \n– What it means to be an expert witness\n– Time commitments and professional responsibilities\n– Reviewing documentation and requesting additional information\n– The possibility of court appearances and cross-examination\n– The professional challenges and rewards of expert witness work\nWhile the role can be time-consuming and demanding\, it is also intellectually engaging\, professionally rewarding\, and often a powerful learning experience that can influence and improve future practice.\n\nIAFR member: Free \nNon-member: $15 \nRegister now via Thinkific link: https://iafr-elearning.thinkific.com/courses/radiographer-expert-witness-25-february-2026

SUMMARY:ANZ Branch Webinar: Detecting drugs in suspected body packers
DESCRIPTION:The July ANZ Branch Webinar is fast approaching. \nThis is a LIVE ONLY event! \nJoin Mariana Podesta-Diverio discussing\, ‘Detecting drugs in suspected body packers’ \nThe Royal Melbourne Hospital is one of a select few locations in Australia that provides imaging to detect concealed drugs in body packers (also called “swallowers” or “couriers”). The practices surrounding the management of these cases have not been documented as ardently as other imaging pathways. A key reason for this is that these patients are brought in by the Australian Federal Police and therefore bypass the traditional Emergency Department admission process. Suspected body packers are monitored for toxidromes rather than invasively examined\, and abdominal imaging is performed in order to confirm the presence of concealed foreign bodies. The protocol used at RMH exists to ensure suspected individuals are assessed with their consent. \nMariana Podesta-Diverio is a radiographer at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in the Emergency Radiology leadership team. Before starting clinical work\, Mariana worked as a research assistant in evidence-based practice. She predominantly works in MRI and CT\, and has a strong interest in trauma-informed care. Her background is in humanities and her practice is influenced by a sociological understanding of healthcare access and provision. \nMembers – Free \nNon members – $15 USD \nRegister now!  https://iafr-elearning.thinkific.com/courses/anz-branch-webinar-july-2025 \n

SUMMARY:ANZ Branch Webinar : DNA identification of the HMAS Sydney unknown sailor - an 80 year mystery solved
DESCRIPTION:The ANZ Branch of IAFR is proud to present the first webinar of the year \, DNA identification of the HMAS Sydney unknown sailor – an 80 year mystery solved by Associate Professor Jeremy Austin. \nFollowing a battle with the German raider HSK Kormoran in November 1941\, the Australian warship HMAS Sydney (II) was sunk claiming the lives of all 645 crew on board. Only one sailor was recovered deceased in a life raft three months later and buried in an unmarked grave on Christmas Island in February 1942. In October 2006\, an archaeological team recovered the ‘Unknown Sailor’s’ remains in order to forensically examine and identify them. This quest finally came to an end on the 80th anniversary of the sinking of HMAS Sydney. Assoc. Prof. Jeremy Austin will discuss his 14-year search and use of ancient DNA technologies\, including the multidisciplinary and multiagency approach to identify the sailor in Australia’s biggest maritime mystery. \nAssociate Professor Jeremy Austin is an evolutionary biologist working in the fields of ancient DNA\, molecular ecology\, conservation genetics and forensic biology. He received his PhD from the University of Tasmania in 1995 and has worked at the Natural History Museum (London)\, University of Queensland (Brisbane)\, Museum Victoria (Melbourne) and the University of Adelaide. Since 2007 Jeremy has applied ancient DNA techniques to allow forensic identification of highly degraded human remains – murder victims\, missing persons and war dead. In this area Jeremy’s group has provided a service to the Australian Defence Force\, Australian Police and humanitarian agencies to assist with the identification of human remains. \nIAFR Members – Free \nNon IAFR Members – $15 US \nRegister now! \n

SUMMARY:ANZ Branch Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join the ANZ Branch of IAFR another fantastic Webinar\, this presentation will be live and not recorded! Don’t miss out! \n25 September 24 @ 2000 AEST / 1100BST \n“I have seen my death” by Dr Lené Burger. \nForensic pathologists use their medical skill and knowledge to determine the cause of death in\npeople who died suddenly or in suspicious circumstances. In recent years\, medical imaging has\nbeen added to our toolbox\, in some cases allowing us to avoid invasive autopsies and in other\ncases allowing us to plan our approach to cases before the start of the autopsy.\nIn this presentation Dr Burger will discuss the role of the forensic pathologist in the 21st century\, and how forensic radiology can help us work smarter. \n  \n  \nA bit about Dr Burger: \nDr Lené Burger obtained her specialist qualification in 2006\, and started her career as a forensic\npathologist in Cape Town\, South Africa. She moved to Sydney in 2016\, where she now works as a\nsenior staff specialist and the Forensic Pathology Training Coordinator for NSW Health Pathology. \n  \nThis is not a webinar to be missed!

SUMMARY:ANZ Branch Webinar: Mental Wellbeing in Forensic Radiography
DESCRIPTION:Join the ANZ Branch of IAFR for another fantastic Webinar: Mental Wellbeing in Forensic Radiography presented by Courtney Steels \nBeing healthcare professionals and forensic radiographers\, we have to empathise with our patients without getting too attached\, be present for them whilst we have many other things going on around us and manage the confronting things we see along the way in our roles\, putting on a brave face and carrying on. We can be left feeling stressed or overwhelmed at times or even just find ourselves being wound up\, with a need to pause and hit the reset button. This presentation aims to bring awareness to the importance of mental health in radiographers and in particular forensic radiographers. It will discuss how to recognise a decline in wellbeing\, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and outline how Mindfulness and other tools can improve and maintain good mental health. The practice of Mindfulness is about being in the present moment and gaining skills which allow us to remain calm\, reduce stress and achieve the best focus and mental performance. I will also provide valuable resources and lead the group through a brief mindfulness meditation session. \nCourtney Steels has been a radiographer for 10 years after graduating from Curtin University in Perth\, Western Australia. She was an inaugural member of the ANZ-IAFR branch and has completed DVI training and a post grad certificate in Forensic Radiography. Her love for travel has led to working briefly in the Northern Territory and then the UK where she worked in major trauma centres throughout\nthe pandemic\, in postmortem CT and with mobile CT scanners. Discussions around the importance of mental health are close to Courtney’s heart\, as she has dealt with anxiety since she was a child and a bout of depression in late high school. Courtney is a big advocate for mindfulness practices and opening up discussions around mental health. \nRegister via the IAFR eLearning platform : \nhttps://iafr-elearning.thinkific.com/courses/Mental-Wellbeing-in-Forensic-Radiography \n

SUMMARY:ANZ Branch Webinar : Medical Imaging - A Role In Brain Death AND Clinical Workup of the Organ Donor
DESCRIPTION:BOOK NOW!  \nhttps://www.trybooking.com/CIWPA \n  \nJoin the ANZ branch of the IAFR for their next webinar which combines two presentations\, ‘Medical\nImaging: A role in brain death’ by Shannon Crick and ‘Clinical workup of the organ donor’ by Dr Rohit\nD’Costa. \nShannon Crick is the Deputy Director of Medical Imaging at Calvary Public Hospital in the ACT\, and\nmodality lead for CT and XR. She has previously worked as the Clinical Educator at The Canberra\nHospital\, where she collaborated with the ICU Critical Care team and the ACT Donate Life team to\nprovide education to staff around imaging for brain death and organ donation.\nDr Rohit D’Costa is an intensive care physician at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the State Medical\nDirector of DonateLife Victoria. \nBrain death occurs when there is irreversible loss of all functions of the brain\, including the\nbrainstem. Determination of whole brain death is required for the legal determination of death in\nAustralia and New Zealand. If brain death cannot be determined clinically\, Medical Imaging plays a\nvital role in demonstrating the absence of intracranial blood flow and facilitating conversations\naround organ donation. \n“Medical Imaging: A role in brain death” by Shannon Crick\, outlines the physiology of brain death\,\ndiagnosis and reviews the imaging recommendations of the Australia and New Zealand Intensive\nCare Society on brain death. These guidelines provide a roadmap for any hospital imaging centre\nwilling to engage in the remarkable work of the organ donation teams across Australia. \n“Clinical workup of the organ donor” by Dr Rohit D’Costa\, will focus on the clinical management\,\ninvestigation and facilitation of the organ donation process with particular focus on the types of\nradiological tests that may be requested and their rationale. \nIAFR Member: Free\nASMIRT/NZMIRT Member: $10\nNon-Member: $20\nBook via trybooking https://www.trybooking.com/CIWPA

SUMMARY:ANZ Branch Webinar: Socio-Legal Implications of Virtual Autopsies in Coronial Investigations
DESCRIPTION:Join the ANZ branch of the IAFR for their next webinar “Socio-Legal Implications of Virtual Autopsies in Coronial Investigations” by Dr Marc Trabsky \n \nDr Marc Trabsky is an Associate Professor in Law and an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow at La Trobe University. He has published Law and the Dead: Technology\, Relations and Institutions (Routledge\, 2019)\, which was awarded the Law and Society Association of Australia and New Zealand Book Prize in 2019. His second book\, Death: New Trajectories in Law\, is in press with Routledge for publication in 2023\, and he is co-editing with Associate Professor Imogen Jones the Routledge Handbook of Law and Death for publication in 2024. \n  \nIn this webinar Dr Marc Trabsky will discuss the scope of his Australian Research Council DECRA project\, which examines how forensic imaging technology impacts coronial investigations in Australia. It focuses on how post-mortem computed tomography [CT] has been used to supplement or as a triage for invasive autopsies for the purposes of identifying the deceased and determining the medical cause of a death. \nLittle is known about how technological modifications to coronial investigations assist or hinder practitioners in fulfilling their legal responsibilities. The project will therefore analyse how forensic imaging technology has transformed coronial investigations since the twentieth century and how it continues to affect the way coroners and other legal personnel working in the jurisdiction understand their roles in the legal system. \nIf the use of post-mortem CT is to be expanded in Australia\, then it is critical to these debates that we examine the social and legal effects of the implementation of forensic imaging technology in coronial investigations. \n  \nIAFR Member Free \nASMIRT/NZMIRT Member $10 \nNon Member $20 \nBooking via Trybooking:  https://www.trybooking.com/CGNBG \n  \n

SUMMARY:ANZ Branch Webinar: Spectral\, DECT & PMCT
DESCRIPTION:Join the ANZ branch of the IAFR for their next webinar “Spectral\,  DECT and Post-mortem CT (PMCT)” presented by Dominic Gascho and Dr Tomoya Kobayashi. \n  \n \nDominic Gascho: \nMr. Dominic Gascho is Manager of Medical Technical Radiology at the Forensic Institute\, University of Zurich and is head of the Post-mortem Imaging Technology research group (a subdivision of the Virtopsy research group). He studied radiologic technology in Austria. After three years of clinical radiology\, he switched to forensic post-mortem radiology and imaging and joined the Virtopsy group in September 2012. From 2020 to 2022\, he deepened his knowledge in imaging with a university master’s degree in medical physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. \n  \nThe new technology of photon-counting computed tomography enables new possibilities in forensic imaging. On the one hand\, this semiconductor detector technology enables higher resolution (subpixels)\, lower noise (signal threshold)\, as well as better soft tissue contrast due to good image quality even at lower energies (constant dependence of detector responsivity to energy). On the other hand\, new possibilities arise in material differentiation (virtual mono-energetic imaging and “energy-bin” imaging). This webinar will provide a brief introduction to the photon-counting detector technology and potential applications in forensic imaging. \n  \nDr Tomoya Kobayashi: \nDr Tomoya Kobayashi (RT\, Ph.D.) is an Assistant Professor for the Clinical Imaging Department at Tohoku University\, and for the Legal Medicine of Social Medicine Department at Nihon University School of Medicine. Dr. Kobayashi is a member of the Post-mortem Imaging Committee\, The Japan Association of Radiological Technologists and is currently a director of the Japan Society of Autopsy imaging\, and Vice President of The Japanese Society of Autopsy imaging and Technology (JSAiT). \n  \n  \nPMCT: \nPost-mortem CT (PMCT) is effective in determining the cause of death especially from haemorrhagic causes. Contrast-enhanced PMCT angiography and post-mortem MRI have been reported to detect intravascular embolisms and soft tissue changes\, but are not widely used due to relatively long scan time and the expensive cost.  As high radiation exposure and dosage is not an issue for a corpse and the body does not move during PMCT\, repetitive scanning of the same site is possible\, which adds to the image data of the target site. This X-ray summation method applied at PMCT is called “fused PMCT”. Our pilot study showed that the fused PMCT reduced image noise and could clearly delineate the coronary arterial wall and hypostasis in the lumen by scanning the same site repeatedly. This webinar will present the fused PMCT procedures and various case studies. \n  \nhttps://www.trybooking.com/CDJCP \nIAFR Member– Free \nASMIRT/NZMIRT Member $5 \nNon-member $10

SUMMARY:ANZ Branch Webinar: Imaging in the Green
DESCRIPTION:Join the ANZ branch of the IAFR for their next webinar Imaging in the Green by Capt. Julian Thacker.\nCaptain Thacker trained as a radiographer at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology qualifying with a Bachelor of Medical Imaging in January 2009. He worked at Waikato Hospital in all areas of the general radiography department and then cardiology before re-enlisting in the New Zealand Defence Force as a reserve Radiographer in 2012\, transferring to the Regular force in 2013.\nCaptain Thacker is currently the Senior Radiographer for Defence and Officer in Charge of the Diagnostic Support Team\, which includes both medical imaging and laboratory scientists. \nCaptain Thacker served as a Reserve Forces Medic in the 1990’s\, has been a volunteer ambulance officer\, a volunteer firefighter for over 20 years\, and enjoys photography and archery. \nWe are very much looking forward to his presentation on being a radiographer in the armed forces. Medical Imaging in the New Zealand Army incorporates many skills over and above those of a civilian radiographer. While the core skill we are employed for is obviously our medical imaging trade\, there are a variety of additional skills we are required to learn that are particular to the NZ Defence Force. From weapons training to cooking in the field\, leadership to military law\, there are many facets to being an Officer in the New Zealand Defence Force. There are also opportunities to learn new skills that may be of interest to an individual such as heavy vehicle licences\, shooting coaching\, and military health planning. \nMedical imaging in the field incorporates all the skills we employ with regard to trauma imaging\, adaptive technique and can involve periods of intense activity along with long spells of boredom. The ability to manage oneself is critical in this environment\, where you are generally deployed as a sole radiographer and can be called on with no notice to manage everything from a sprained finger to multiple trauma scenarios. Working very closely with the medical team is critical to managing the workload\, your own well being and that of the team to enable effective patient treatment. \nRegistration:\nhttps://www.trybooking.com/BTOZK \nIAFR Member $0\nASMIRT/NZIMRT Member $10\nNon-Member $20

SUMMARY:ANZ Branch Webinar: Forensic Anthropology in the Field
DESCRIPTION:The ANZ Branch of the International Association of Forensic Radiographers are proud to present two online webinars on Forensic Anthropology and Archaeology in June and July. Forensic anthropology and archaeology are fields which run closely alongside forensic imaging but are often misunderstood or overlooked when we think of the radiography world. While Forensic anthropologists and archaeologists can often be found working synchronously to search for\, recover and identify human remains\, there are very different objectives and skills involved. \nThese webinars will help forensic radiographers understand more about forensic anthropology and forensic archaeology\, explain some of the techniques used and discuss how imaging is playing a role in these fields. We also introduce our wonderful speakers Nick and Donna\, who both have a wealth of experience in the field of archaeology and anthropology and will share their work and experiences with us. \nOn the 28TH July 7:30pm AEST we will have Donna MacGregor presenting Forensic Anthropology in the Field.  Donna is a lecturer in forensic science and anatomy\, with a background as a forensic anthropologist in the Australian Army Reserves and also worked for the Queensland Police force as a crime scene investigator. \nDonna’s work with the Australian Army as a forensic anthropologist allows the recovery of War Casualties\, very important and interesting work. We are lucky enough to have Donna speak about some of her experiences of forensic anthropology in the field and her work with the Army and Police. \nRegistration is free for IAFR members\, $10 for ASMIRT/NZMIRT members and $20 for non-members. \nRegistration: https://www.trybooking.com/BSZAP \nCPD certificates of attendance will only be issued to those who attend the live webinar. \nPlease note this webinar will NOT be recorded so you MUST be available to attend the live event!
