While Forensic anthropologists and archaeologists can often be found working synchronously to search for\, recover and identify human remains\, there are very different objectives and skills involved. \nThese webinars will help forensic radiographers understand more about forensic anthropology and forensic archaeology\, explain some of the techniques used and discuss how imaging is playing a role in these fields. We also introduce our wonderful speakers Nick and Donna\, who both have a wealth of experience in the field of archaeology and anthropology and will share their work and experiences with us. \nOn the 28TH July 7:30pm AEST we will have Donna MacGregor presenting Forensic Anthropology in the Field.  Donna is a lecturer in forensic science and anatomy\, with a background as a forensic anthropologist in the Australian Army Reserves and also worked for the Queensland Police force as a crime scene investigator. \nDonna’s work with the Australian Army as a forensic anthropologist allows the recovery of War Casualties\, very important and interesting work. SUMMARY:IAFR Webinar #26 - Radiographic Image Quality\, Processing and Optimization
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Sandoval is certified by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Imaging Physics and holds an MS and PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the University of New Mexico (UNM). Dr. Sandoval has been a practicing Medical Physicist for the UNM Department of Radiology in Albuquerque\, New Mexico USA since 2008. His research includes work with the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator in post-mortem imaging and dosimetry. He has been a member of and contributor to the International Society for Forensic Radiology and Imaging (ISFRI) since May 2014. \n\nAbstract \nDigital and computed radiography are an integral component of clinical and post mortem imaging. Although x-ray tube and detector technology are very similar across vendors\, image quality can be drastically different. After this talk\, attendees will be able to talk describe the underlying aspects of digital radiographic image quality; explain the effects of noise on image contrast; and list the general steps in digital image processing. DESCRIPTION:Mindfulness for Healthcare Professionals – Courtney Steels \nPresenter Bio \nCourtney has been a radiographer since the end of 2013\, after graduating from Curtin University in Perth\, Western Australia.   After attending a Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) course in Melbourne in 2018\, Courtney’s interest in forensic radiography was sparked and she became a member of the inaugural ANZ-IAFR branch.  Her love for travel led her to work briefly in the Northern Territory before moving to the UK in April 2019 where she currently resides.  Mindfulness is a topic close to Courtney’s heart and something she is passionate about sharing with others.  Finding Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy to Courtney was like finding a toolbox at the end of a rainbow\, the principles are simple\, it makes sense and it really works.  The skills you can gain from mindfulness are applicable in any situation in or out of work.  Courtney is a big advocate for encouraging others to build mindfulness practices into their own routines. \n\nAbstract \nBeing healthcare professionals\, we have to empathise with our patients without getting too attached\, be present for them whilst we have many other things going on around us and manage the confronting things we see along the way in our roles\, putting on a brave face and carrying on.  We can be left feeling stressed or overwhelmed at times or even just find ourselves being wound up\, with a need to pause and hit the reset button.  The practice of Mindfulness is about being in the present moment and gaining skills which allow us to remain calm\, reduce stress and achieve the best focus and mental performance. DESCRIPTION:The Beginning of Forensic Radiography in Denmark – Christina Pedersen \nChristina has a BSc in Radiography from The University College of Northern Denmark.  She is currently the only Forensic Radiographer in Denmark and is positioned as a Forensic and Paediatric Project Radiographer in the city of Aarhus.  Her way into the forensic field was through the patient group of children under Suspected Physical Abuse\, both in the living and post-mortem cases.  She has great experience in adult forensic cases and the main tasks of her forensic work involve being a central part in evaluating PMCT scans.  She is involved in PMCTA and takes great part in this research field. \n\n  \nAbstract: \nForensic imaging in Denmark is not a new area for radiographers undertaking living cases; however in post-mortem cases it is different.  Curently\, only one radiographer is actively taking part in this daily work at one of the three Institutes of Forensic Medicine.  This results in having to think out-of-the-box and seek knowledge internationally\, along with places radiographers rarely look. \nThe radiographic work involves; performing conventional x-ray\, creating & editing CT-protocols\, assisting when performing PMCT Angiography\, along with performing research scans both on animals\, artefacts and humans. The daily CT-scans are performed by the forensic technicians\, leaving the largest task for the radiographer – performing the evaluations of the PMCT-scans. \nThe Radiographer’s special knowledge on technical aspects of imaging are highly appreciated and when imaging for forensic purposes the need for high quality is just as essential as imaging the living. SUMMARY:IAFR Webinar #7 - An Introduction to Forensic Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:Roland Wessling – Roland has a BSc in Archaeological Sciences and an MSc in Forensic Archaeology. He has worked as a consultant for the UN ICTY\, on domestic criminal cases in Germany/UK and has been deployed to Cyprus and Iraq for the Inforce Foundation. He was one of the Lead Archaeologists of the excavation of 250 WWI Soldiers in Fromelles\, France. Roland is co-editor of the Cox\, et al.\, 2007\, mass grave book. He is currently employed by Cranfield University as a Lecturer and is co-director of the CRICC Team which carries out recovery and skeletal assessment investigation on conflict casualties. \nAbstract\nForensic archaeologists try to help enforcement agencies to find and recover buried human remains and other evidence and to interpret the burial context to reconstruct past events. At the same time\, forensic archaeological recovery techniques can also be employed to find missing casualties and together with anthropology\, radiography\, pathology and DNA analysis attempt to identify the individual and reunite the missing person with his or her loved ones.\nThere are a number of international organisations that utilise forensic archaeology for their humanitarian and/or forensic work\, such as CMP on Cyprus\, ICMP or the Argentinian and Guatemalan Teams as well as ad hoc teams assembled for specific investigations\, such as ICTY in Bosnia. Other forensic archaeologists concentrate on single murder cases and finally\, there is casework between the two extremes\, such as finding and identifying border crossers on the US-Mexican border\, where thousands perish every year due to dehydration or crime.

The leader of the investigation\, the public prosecutor\, orders a forensic radiological examination. By providing the radiological information to the entire forensic team in an early stage\, forensic follow-up investigations can be initiated. Due to this method\, there is a lot of communication between the radiology department and a diversity of parties within the forensic field\, each with their own frameworks and jargon.

SUMMARY:IAFR Webinar #5 - The Role of the Radiological Technologist for post mortem imaging examinations in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Tomoya Kobayashi\, Chief\, Department of Radiological Technology at Tsukuba Medical Center Hospital; Member of Postmortem Imaging Committee\, Japan Association of Radiological Technologists; Director of the Japan Society of Autopsy imaging. \nThe number of postmortem imaging (PMI) examinations has been rapidly increasing in Japan. Reasons include the extremely low rate of only 1% for conventional autopsies\, and number of installed CT and MRI units in Japan is the largest in the world. Social awareness has also grown to the use of PMI\, and is called “Autopsy imaging” after the word was used in popular mass media dramatic productions and publications.  PMI in Japan is often utilized for screening death causes in particular situations\, including for bodies arriving in emergency rooms in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest\, deaths occurring during hospitalization\, official police inquests into abnormal deaths\, and to serve as a guide to subsequent conventional autopsy.  As a result\, laws have recently been revised to facilitate death-cause detection in Japan\, and PMI has become widely-accepted as an important role of general hospitals. \nDr. Kobayashi will discuss discuss the current roles of radiological technologists in the processes of performing PMI with accuracy and precision\, the organization of PMI examination systems in hospitals\, and the education programs covering PMI procedures and ethics\, all in light of the radically changing social/medical environments and legal systems regarding PMI in Japan.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Steve Naidoo\, Independent Forensic Pathologist\, Durban\, South Africa \n\n\n\nIn this presentation Dr. Naidoo looks at a series of cases he experienced at autopsies where the nature and pattern of the traumatic basal skull fracture was of particular interest in the reconstruction of the case scenario in court\, which led him to delve deeper into the betraying nature of the fracture patterns that may be seen (and notoriously difficult to image by radiography). \n\n\n\nThis talk was primarily compiled for presentation to his usual forensic audience\, but it will also be enlightening for anatomists\, anthropologists\, radiographers and radiologists and interested others to discuss some of the predicaments faced in skull-base examination in autopsy practice. These are issues of (1) Detection; (2) Pattern Recognition\, and (3) Establishing Causation. Detection requires proper basic technique and exposure\, and targeted investigation technique\, Pattern recognition requires knowledge and experience (which can be acquired)\, and establishing Causation requires application of the finding to the questions to be addressed or raised. \n\n\n\nThe cases will be illustrated with both autopsy images as well as anatomical sketches.
