SUMMARY:IAFR Webinar #7 - An Introduction to Forensic Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:Roland Wessling – Roland has a BSc in Archaeological Sciences and an MSc in Forensic Archaeology. He has worked as a consultant for the UN ICTY\, on domestic criminal cases in Germany/UK and has been deployed to Cyprus and Iraq for the Inforce Foundation. He was one of the Lead Archaeologists of the excavation of 250 WWI Soldiers in Fromelles\, France. Roland is co-editor of the Cox\, et al.\, 2007\, mass grave book. He is currently employed by Cranfield University as a Lecturer and is co-director of the CRICC Team which carries out recovery and skeletal assessment investigation on conflict casualties. \nAbstract\nForensic archaeologists try to help enforcement agencies to find and recover buried human remains and other evidence and to interpret the burial context to reconstruct past events. At the same time\, forensic archaeological recovery techniques can also be employed to find missing casualties and together with anthropology\, radiography\, pathology and DNA analysis attempt to identify the individual and reunite the missing person with his or her loved ones.\nThere are a number of international organisations that utilise forensic archaeology for their humanitarian and/or forensic work\, such as CMP on Cyprus\, ICMP or the Argentinian and Guatemalan Teams as well as ad hoc teams assembled for specific investigations\, such as ICTY in Bosnia. Other forensic archaeologists concentrate on single murder cases and finally\, there is casework between the two extremes\, such as finding and identifying border crossers on the US-Mexican border\, where thousands perish every year due to dehydration or crime.

By providing the radiological information to the entire forensic team in an early stage\, forensic follow-up investigations can be initiated. Due to this method\, there is a lot of communication between the radiology department and a diversity of parties within the forensic field\, each with their own frameworks and jargon.

SUMMARY:IAFR Webinar #5 - The Role of the Radiological Technologist for post mortem imaging examinations in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Tomoya Kobayashi\, Chief\, Department of Radiological Technology at Tsukuba Medical Center Hospital; Member of Postmortem Imaging Committee\, Japan Association of Radiological Technologists; Director of the Japan Society of Autopsy imaging. \nThe number of postmortem imaging (PMI) examinations has been rapidly increasing in Japan. Reasons include the extremely low rate of only 1% for conventional autopsies\, and number of installed CT and MRI units in Japan is the largest in the world. Social awareness has also grown to the use of PMI\, and is called “Autopsy imaging” after the word was used in popular mass media dramatic productions and publications.  PMI in Japan is often utilized for screening death causes in particular situations\, including for bodies arriving in emergency rooms in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest\, deaths occurring during hospitalization\, official police inquests into abnormal deaths\, and to serve as a guide to subsequent conventional autopsy.  As a result\, laws have recently been revised to facilitate death-cause detection in Japan\, and PMI has become widely-accepted as an important role of general hospitals. \nDr. Kobayashi will discuss discuss the current roles of radiological technologists in the processes of performing PMI with accuracy and precision\, the organization of PMI examination systems in hospitals\, and the education programs covering PMI procedures and ethics\, all in light of the radically changing social/medical environments and legal systems regarding PMI in Japan.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Steve Naidoo\, Independent Forensic Pathologist\, Durban\, South Africa \n\n\n\nIn this presentation Dr. Naidoo looks at a series of cases he experienced at autopsies where the nature and pattern of the traumatic basal skull fracture was of particular interest in the reconstruction of the case scenario in court\, which led him to delve deeper into the betraying nature of the fracture patterns that may be seen (and notoriously difficult to image by radiography). \n\n\n\nThis talk was primarily compiled for presentation to his usual forensic audience\, but it will also be enlightening for anatomists\, anthropologists\, radiographers and radiologists and interested others to discuss some of the predicaments faced in skull-base examination in autopsy practice. These are issues of (1) Detection; (2) Pattern Recognition\, and (3) Establishing Causation. Detection requires proper basic technique and exposure\, and targeted investigation technique\, Pattern recognition requires knowledge and experience (which can be acquired)\, and establishing Causation requires application of the finding to the questions to be addressed or raised. \n\n\n\nThe cases will be illustrated with both autopsy images as well as anatomical sketches.

DESCRIPTION:The Alfred Hospital\, Melbourne\, Australia \nDVI for Radiographers\n(Pre-congress workshop for ISFRI 2018)\nA Mass Disaster is defined by the fact that local resources can’t cope with the number of injured and deceased people. Therefore\, having a team of Forensic Radiographers (FRRT) trained to be deployed to assist with imaging of the deceased would prevent local Radiographers from being pressurised into providing a forensic imaging service. Forensic imaging is not a core competency of a graduate Radiographer. This is an opportunity to provide education and training for Radiographers interested in this area or who are currently involved in providing a forensic imaging service. \nAim of the Study Event\nThis training event will provide an opportunity for all radiographers to apply the principles of forensic practice and imaging learned in theory (Day 1) to a mock deployment DVI scenario (Day 2) using imaging equipment and the appropriate IAFR and Interpol paperwork. \nHow does Forensic Radiography contribute to DVI?\nForensic Radiography involves the application of imaging techniques to answer a question of law. It involves dental radiography\, radiography or CT most commonly. Following the London Bombings in July 2007\, the UK Forensic Radiography Response Team (UKFRRT) were deployed to assist in the National Emergency Mortuary. There were 3 radiography stations: fluoroscopy as part of the triage where body bags were scanned for undetonated explosives\, sharp objects or personal belongings (e.g. keys\, wallets\, mobile phones). Dental radiography was undertaken which assisted in the identification process. General radiographic surveys were performed to assist with documentation of evidence. \nPost-mortem CT scanning is becoming more common in DVI investigations. Victims of the Black Saturday Bush Fires underwent a CT scan and 2 children were identified based on this imaging. In the more recent DVI incident of MH17 \, all victims underwent a CT scan so it is important that radiographers have an opportunity to learn about the forensic aspects of becoming involved in forensic imaging. CT was also used in the 2017 terrorist incidents in the UK. \nLearning Outcomes\nAt the end of the DVI training\, the forensic radiographer will: \n\nHave an understanding of the overall DVI process\nAppreciate the role of the Forensic Radiographer in the DVI process\nBe aware of the psychological aspects of forensic imaging\nHave undertaken forensic imaging including fluoroscopy\, radiography\, dental radiography and CT in a mock deployment scenario\nHave completed the associated IAFR and Interpol paperwork to ensure continuity of evidence\nHave identified commonly seen objects in the Image Interpretation workshop\nHave participated in the AM/PM reconciliation workshop\nBe able to make an informed decision if they would like to apply for membership of their local FRRT advising of their availability for deployment\n\nPractical Training workshops\n\nDental radiography techniques \n\nRadiographers will have the opportunity to observe use of portable dental x-ray equipment and practice dental radiography techniques.\n\n\nAM v’s PM Dental Image Comparison \n\nAn opportunity to gain experience from an experienced Forensic Dentist in comparison techniques between ante-mortem and post-mortem data so the forensic radiographer appreciates what they are trying to achieve when replicating AM dental imaging. \n\n\nForensic Fluoroscopy techniques \n\nRadiographers will have the opportunity to practise screening a simulated body bag and locate artefacts interest under fluoroscopic control. This also involves the documentation of the screening process using the appropriate IAFR and Interpol forms.\n\n\nForensic Radiography techniques\n\nRadiographers will have an opportunity the use a mobile x-ray machine that could be available on deployment\, as well as documenting the radiography process using the appropriate IAFR and Interpol forms. \n\n\nPMCT \n\nAn introduction to PMCT scanning performed for DVI purposes\, including scan protocols and using the appropriate IAFR and Interpol forms.\n\n\nPattern Recognition and Practical Problems \n\nAn image viewing session on forensic image interpretation and advice on planning for their first deployment as a forensic radiographer.
