SUMMARY:IAFR Webinar on Paediatric Paleo-Radiology
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr Katherine Van Schaik \n  \nThis paper evaluates the use of paleoradiology techniques in the analysis of pediatric remains and offers an algorithmic protocol for the evaluation of pediatric skeletal and soft tissue remains. We searched for relevant literature from three major bioarchaeological journals\, PubMed\, and the Yearbook of Mummy Studies\, and supplemented this review with protocols and studies published in radiological journals.Findings demonstrate that\, although radiological techniques are used with increasing frequency in the assessment of pediatric remains\, no standardized pediatric imaging protocols exist. This is the first literature review to focus exclusively on pediatric paleoradiology and the first proposal of imaging protocols tailored for the assessment of pediatric remains from bioarchaeological contexts. It holds implications for how paleoradiology techniques might be systematically used and applied to pediatric remains from multiple time periods\, across the world. We also offer imaging protocol and reporting recommendations specific to pediatric remains from bioarchaeological contexts. \nAbout the presenter\nDr. Van Schaik is an American Board of Radiology Holman Research Pathway resident in radiology at Harvard Medical School. She received her AB\,Summa cum Laude\, in Classics and Molecular and Cellular Biology from Harvard College\, her MD with Honors from Harvard Medical School\, and her PhD in Classics – Ancient History from the Harvard Department of the Classics. \nAs a Harvard Knox Fellow\, she received an MA with Distinction in Classical Art and Archaeology from King’s College\, University of London. Her current research\, for which she has been awarded grants from the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Archaeological Institute of America\, focuses on paleoradiology and skeletal epigenetics. \nRegistration is free for members and non-members.
