SUMMARY:IAFR Webinar #24 - The Importance of Documentation in Medico-Legal Cases
DESCRIPTION:Steve Naidoo is a specialist forensic pathologist\, with over 30 years’ experience.  Special interests include applied forensic anatomy\, the pathology of trauma\, and sexual offences.  He worked with the Truth Commission in South Africa\, death investigations in Mozambique\, in the Former Yugoslavia (Bosnia\, Croatia and Kosovo)\, the 2012 Marikana Massacre\, East Africa\, and in The Gambia.  As Associate Professor in Forensic Medicine\, he was the first Chairman of the African Society of Forensic Medicine.  He has had much experience in giving testimony in court.  Steve does independent consulting and is currently involved in training in sexual abuse medicine. \n\nAbstract \nAbstract \nEvidence from medico-legal examinations is often presented in a court.  In order for such evidence to be admissible\, it must have been gathered and presented according to the rules of evidence appropriate for the relevant jurisdiction. Witnesses presenting evidence must be able to show an unbroken link between the evidence that they present and the subject of the examination and/or the crime scene.  The conduct and documentation of medico-legal examinations is therefore of the highest importance. The talk will cover the rules and procedures of evidence in the courtroom\, how the legal system operates and discuss good practice for documentation of medico-legal examinations and the pitfalls that await the unprepared.
