Mass graves are a frequent legacy of conflict and human rights abuses. Survivors have a
\nneed to know the truth about the fate of their loved ones, and they have the right under
\ninternational and domestic law, to the pursuit of truth, justice and reparation. Governments
\nhave statutory obligations to survivors, including the obligation to ensure that the human
\nremains of victims are identified and returned to families so that they can be buried with
\ndignity, and appropriate memorialization can take place.<\/p>\n

Radiology plays a key role in the forensic investigation of war crimes and mass graves.
\nDrawing on their experiences of investigating and analysing forensic evidence from mass
\ngraves and clandestine burials in the former Yugoslavia, Sierra Leone, Iraq, Cyprus and the
\nRepublic of Ireland, our four keynote speakers will outline the painstaking processes
\nfollowed in order to preserve and record the evidence. The role played by radiology and radiographers in these historical incidents will be examined in order to highlight the lessons
\nlearned for future investigations.<\/p>\n
