{"id":1792,"date":"2021-08-18T23:09:35","date_gmt":"2021-08-18T22:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forensicradiography.com\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=1792"},"modified":"2021-09-03T07:56:35","modified_gmt":"2021-09-03T06:56:35","slug":"iafr-webinar-4-the-importance-of-the-examination-of-the-base-of-skull-to-the-forensic-pathologist","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/forensicradiography.com\/index.php\/event\/iafr-webinar-4-the-importance-of-the-examination-of-the-base-of-skull-to-the-forensic-pathologist\/","title":{"rendered":"IAFR Webinar #4 &#8211; The Importance of the Examination of the Base of Skull to the Forensic Pathologist"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Dr. Steve Naidoo,\u00a0Independent Forensic Pathologist, Durban, South Africa<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>In this presentation Dr. Naidoo looks at a series of cases he experienced at autopsies where the nature and pattern of the traumatic basal skull fracture was of particular interest in the reconstruction of the case scenario in court, which led him to delve deeper into the betraying nature of the fracture patterns that may be seen (and notoriously difficult to image by radiography).<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>This talk was primarily compiled for presentation to his usual forensic audience, but it will also be enlightening for anatomists, anthropologists, radiographers and radiologists and interested others to discuss some of the predicaments faced in skull-base examination in autopsy practice. These are issues of (1) Detection; (2) Pattern Recognition, and (3) Establishing Causation. Detection requires proper basic technique and exposure, and targeted investigation technique, Pattern recognition requires knowledge and experience (which can be acquired), and establishing Causation requires application of the finding to the questions to be addressed or raised.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The cases will be illustrated with both autopsy images as well as anatomical
