Julian Thacker.
Captain Thacker trained as a radiographer at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology qualifying with a Bachelor of Medical Imaging in January 2009. He worked at Waikato Hospital in all areas of the general radiography department and then cardiology before re-enlisting in the New Zealand Defence Force as a reserve Radiographer in 2012, transferring to the Regular force in 2013.
Captain Thacker is currently the Senior Radiographer for Defence and Officer in Charge of the Diagnostic Support Team, which includes both medical imaging and laboratory scientists.

Captain Thacker served as a Reserve Forces Medic in the 1990’s, has been a volunteer ambulance officer, a volunteer firefighter for over 20 years, and enjoys photography and archery.

We are very much looking forward to his presentation on being a radiographer in the armed forces. Medical Imaging in the New Zealand Army incorporates many skills over and above those of a civilian radiographer. While the core skill we are employed for is obviously our medical imaging trade, there are a variety of additional skills we are required to learn that are particular to the NZ Defence Force. From weapons training to cooking in the field, leadership to military law, there are many facets to being an Officer in the New Zealand Defence Force. There are also opportunities to learn new skills that may be of interest to an individual such as heavy vehicle licences, shooting coaching, and military health planning.

Medical imaging in the field incorporates all the skills we employ with regard to trauma imaging, adaptive technique and can involve periods of intense activity along with long spells of boredom. The ability to manage oneself is critical in this environment, where you are generally deployed as a sole radiographer and can be called on with no notice to manage everything from a sprained finger to multiple trauma scenarios. Working very closely with the medical team is critical to managing the workload, your own well being and that of the team to enable effective patient treatment.

Registration:
https://www.trybooking.com/BTOZK

IAFR Member $0
ASMIRT/NZIMRT Member $10
Non-Member $20

Join the ANZ branch of the IAFR for their next webinar Imaging in the Green by Capt.
