Abstract

Abstract

Evidence from medico-legal examinations is often presented in a court.  In order for such evidence to be admissible, it must have been gathered and presented according to the rules of evidence appropriate for the relevant jurisdiction. Witnesses presenting evidence must be able to show an unbroken link between the evidence that they present and the subject of the examination and/or the crime scene.  The conduct and documentation of medico-legal examinations is therefore of the highest importance. The talk will cover the rules and procedures of evidence in the courtroom, how the legal system operates and discuss good practice for documentation of medico-legal examinations and the pitfalls that await the unprepared. The speaker will use case examples from his wide experience as a previous state pathologist and professor of Forensic Medicine and later independent expert.
