IAFR Webinar on Paediatric Paleo-Radiology
April 27, 2022 @ 18:00 - 19:00 UTCFree
Presenter: Dr Katherine Van Schaik
This paper evaluates the use of paleoradiology techniques in the analysis of pediatric remains and offers an algorithmic protocol for the evaluation of pediatric skeletal and soft tissue remains. We searched for relevant literature from three major bioarchaeological journals, PubMed, and the Yearbook of Mummy Studies, and supplemented this review with protocols and studies published in radiological journals.Findings demonstrate that, although radiological techniques are used with increasing frequency in the assessment of pediatric remains, no standardized pediatric imaging protocols exist. This is the first literature review to focus exclusively on pediatric paleoradiology and the first proposal of imaging protocols tailored for the assessment of pediatric remains from bioarchaeological contexts. It holds implications for how paleoradiology techniques might be systematically used and applied to pediatric remains from multiple time periods, across the world. We also offer imaging protocol and reporting recommendations specific to pediatric remains from bioarchaeological contexts.
About the presenter
